It was a little over a year ago when Olympian Brian Sell decided to hang up the racing flats permanently. The “blue collar”/underdog marathoner that we had all grown to love and wanted to follow had stepped down after disappointing results that followed the 2008 Olympic Games. Not long ago, to run a marathon in Japan all you had to do was sign up, show up and run your heart out. But nowadays, the greatest obstacle would-be marathoners face is no longer the course itself, but rather getting the chance to set foot on it.
